How to Correctly Replace the Oil Filter

Regularly changing the oil of internal combustion engine vehicles is the top priority of vehicle maintenance. It is necessary to change the oil and oil filter on time according to the oil life cycle in the vehicle user manual. Generally, it is recommended to change it every 3 months or 5000 kilometers. So how to change the oil and auto oil filter correctly?

Ⅰ. Equipped with tools needed to replace oil and auto oil filter

(1) Sufficient amount of new engine oil: Check your user manual to select the appropriate SAE viscosity, API performance and quantity of engine oil required.

(2) A new engine oil filter: Most vehicles use rotating oil filters of different models and sizes. (Check your user manual to choose the right model and size)

(3) Engine filter wrench: This is a necessary tool when we are changing the auto oil filter.

(4) Gloves: Cotton gloves are required. Wear gloves can first prevent slippage and secondly prevent burns.

(5) Waste oil basin: Use a waste oil basin to prevent the oil from flowing everywhere. Suggestion: Put a plastic bag on the basin, which is more convenient to dispose of waste engine oil and can also make the basin cleaner.

(6) A funnel and a wooden wedge. (These two items are not necessary, but it's best to have them)

(7) Jack or elevator: It is used to raise the chassis of the car to facilitate the replacement of the auto oil filter.

(8) Wrench: 15mm wrench.

Ⅱ. Replacement steps of oil and auto oil filter

1. Vehicle preparation

Run the engine to reach operating temperature. Then use a jack or elevator to jack up the vehicle, pull up the handbrake and squeeze the front wheel with a wooden wedge. And check the situation under the chassis.

2. Drain the old oil

Use a 15mm wrench to loosen the oil plug screw in a counterclockwise direction. Don't tighten it too much. At this time, put the basin covered with plastic bag under the screw.

After the basin is placed, continue to screw the screws with your hands. When the oil drips, you should carefully unscrew the screws so as not to be burned by the hot oil. (It is recommended to do maintenance after the car is cooled)

3. Remove the oil filter

When the old oil is almost removed, you can use the filter wrench to unload the filter. Open the oil cap on the engine cover and loosen the engine oil filter counterclockwise with a filter wrench.

Unscrew the engine oil filter from the engine compartment, and take care not to touch the hot exhaust manifold. At this time, there is still a little residual oil in the engine filter, be careful not to drip it everywhere.

4. Preparations before the installation of the oil filter

(1) Oil filter installed vertically

It is connected to the oil pump through an oil pipe. This installation method generally recommends that the user replace the filter before filling the engine filter with oil.

If the filter of the new engine is not filled with oil, air resistance will be generated inside the new filter, which will cause a short period of the lack of oil lubrication inside the engine when the car is started, which will cause the structural parts to wear.

The advantage of the vertical installation method is that the filter has better sealing performance, and there is little oil leakage.

(2) Oil filter installed horizontally

It is directly connected to the oil pump without passing through the oil pipe. This design does not generate air resistance inside the filter when the oil tank is filled with oil.

Before the filter is installed, there is no need to fill it with oil in advance. While we are injecting new oil into the oil tank, the oil filter can be directly filled with oil.

5. Add new oil

On the top of the engine, you will see a cap with the word "oil". Open the oil cap, insert a funnel and inject a certain amount of oil, and pull out the oil dipstick to determine whether it is filled with oil. Then close the oil cap and wipe off the spilled oil.

6. Start the engine for a few minutes

Start the engine for a few minutes, then turn it off and check the oil dipstick again to determine if the oil level is appropriate. Finally, check if there is any oil leakage from the bottom of the vehicle.

7. Dispose of used oil

Finally, in terms of safety and environmental protection, this is the most important step, which is to properly dispose of used or waste oil discharged from vehicles. Waste oil is very harmful to the environment, so it is extremely important to safely dispose of waste oil.
